Le château de Foix est situé sur un éperon rocheux au-dessus de la ville de Foix et de la vallée de l’Ariège, et son histoire remonte au 10 ème siècle, bien que la majeure partie du château que nous voyons lors de notre visite ait été construite au 12 ème siècle.
Cet emplacement a été choisi en raison de son importante position stratégique protégeant la vallée de l’Ariège que l’on peut voir derrière le château.
Les deux tours carrées, avec la zone protégée ouverte entre elles, datent du 12ème siècle et plus. La tour ronde et la chapelle ont été ajoutées au 15ème siècle. Il existe également un mur défensif supplémentaire autour de l’ensemble du château.
Comme de nombreux châteaux de la région, le château de Foix a été occupé au 12ème siècle par les cathares, poursuivis par la croisade albigeoise de Simon de Montfort. Cependant, en raison de sa position défensive, il ne parvint pas à le capturer, bien qu’il ait assiégé le château à deux reprises.
Soixante ans plus tard, le roi Philippe réussit à s’emparer du château : le moyen le plus facile de s’emparer d’un château est toujours la trahison plutôt que la force, et c’est ainsi que le château a été capturé par la suite.
Parce qu’il a été construit comme une forteresse défensive, le château n’était pas idéal comme résidence et au 15ème siècle, après avoir occupé le château pendant plusieurs siècles, les comtes de Foix ont largement choisi de vivre dans leur palais des gouverneurs voisin, bien que le château ait continué à jouer un rôle important dans la défense de la région jusqu’à la fin des guerres de religion.
Le château de Foix a continué à être utilisé pour des réunions et des réceptions importantes, ainsi que comme garnison de l’armée, et il a ainsi échappé à la négligence qui a conduit à la ruine de nombreux châteaux après la fin des guerres. Pendant près de cent ans après la Révolution, le château a continué à être utilisé, cette fois comme prison.
Le château a été largement rénové au 19ème siècle et abrite aujourd’hui le musée départemental de l’Ariège, qui explique l’histoire de Foix et du département avec des objets de la préhistoire et de la période romaine ainsi que de la période cathare et de la ville médiévale.

La ville de Foix est intéressante à explorer, avec plusieurs autres bâtiments historiques dans le centre ville. Une autre ville agréable à explorer près de Foix est Mirepoix, une bastide traditionnelle avec un centre médiéval, et les visiteurs voudront également visiter le château cathare de Montségur.
